Meet the Wordens
Worden Farm is an 85 acre certified organic family farm in Southwest Florida, founded and actively run by Chris Worden, Ph.D. and Eva Worden, Ph.D. They both hold Masters of Science degrees in Horticulture from University of Maryland. Dr. Chris Worden’s doctorate is in Crop Science from University of Connecticut, and Dr. Eva Worden’s doctorate is in Ecosystem Management from Yale University.
Chris and Eva Worden are committed to changing the landscape of farming, one beet at a time. The farm hosts a series of tours and events to educate the public and fellow farmers about organic gardening, food preservation, small scale livestock, cheese making, organic crop production and marketing.
The workshops are opportunities to learn organic strategies used at Worden Farm that can be applied at smaller scale to help the community succeed with organic vegetable gardening in Southwest Florida. They help with site selection, irrigation, crop planning, propagation, soil fertility, composting, and pest management.
Sustainable Organic Farming
The farm is managed with a variety of sustainable methods for conserving and enhancing natural and human ecosystems. Chris and Eva Worden are renowned for their use of innovative organic farming techniques.
Crops at Worden Farm are grown with attention to both environmental health and human health. Worden farm has partnered with the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service and the Southwest Florida Water Management District on micro-irrigation and other water conservation projects for improving environmental quality.
Fourteen acres of pine flatwoods adjoining the farm were acquired in 2010, expanding Worden Farm’s land conservation and environmental stewardship. Located in an area of cattle ranches, orange groves, and pinelands, the abundant sunshine, mild climate, and pure environment contribute to a bountiful, healthful harvest.
You can find Worden Farm every Saturday at the Sarasota Farmers Market from October through May.
